Supplies You’ll Need
Cupcakes
- Standard 12-cup muffin tin with your choice of cupcake liners
- Prepared lemon cupcake batter
- Lemon or vanilla buttercream
- Piping bag fitted with a large star tip, such as a 1M or JEM 3J
- Plastic wrap, for the ombre swirl technique
- Chefmaster Natural Food Colors: Pink, Red, Yellow, and Sunset Orange
Decorations (Optional)
- Sparkling sugar crystal sprinkles
- Fresh lemon slices or candied lemon peel for serving
Directions
-
Prepare your lemon cupcake batter according to your favorite recipe. Line a standard muffin tin with paper liners and fill each cup about 2/3 full. Bake according to your recipe instructions, then transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before decorating.
-
Prepare your buttercream and divide it evenly among four separate bowls.
-
Using Chefmaster Natural Food Colors, color one bowl with Natural Yellow, one with Natural Sunset Orange, one with Natural Pink, and the final bowl with Natural Red for a deep sunset shade.
-
Lay a long sheet of plastic wrap flat on your countertop or work surface.
-
Pipe or spoon each color of buttercream onto the plastic wrap in long, side-by-side strips. There’s no need to arrange the colors in a particular order—the combination will create a beautiful sunset effect as you pipe.
-
Carefully roll the plastic wrap around the buttercream to form a log. Twist both ends closed, then snip off one of the twisted ends.
-
Place the buttercream log, cut side down, into a piping bag fitted with your large star tip. If the log is too large for your piping bag, simply squeeze the buttercream directly from the plastic wrap into the piping bag. The colors should remain mostly side by side to preserve the ombre effect.
-
Pipe a gorgeous, multicolored swirl, dollop, or your preferred design onto each cooled cupcake. For a classic cupcake swirl, begin near the center and work your way around the cupcake, building upward and finishing with a peak.
-
Finish each cupcake with a light dusting of sparkling sugar crystals for an extra touch of sunset shimmer.
Decorating Tips
Keep It Cool: If your kitchen is warm, chill your buttercream for 5–10 minutes before filling your piping bag. This helps the frosting hold its shape and prevents the sunset colors from blending together too quickly.
Let the Colors Develop: Chefmaster Natural Food Colors may deepen slightly as they rest, so start with frosting that’s a little lighter than your intended final shades. For faster, more even color development, you can also use an immersion blender to blend the color into your buttercream.
Choose Lightweight Sprinkles: Avoid heavy decorations that may weigh down your delicate buttercream swirls. Fine sparkling sugar crystals or light nonpareils are perfect for adding a subtle touch of evening sparkle.
If Your Buttercream Softens: If your piped swirls begin losing their definition while you work, place the filled piping bag in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to firm up the buttercream before continuing.
Bright, cheerful, and full of summer personality, these Sunset Ombre Lemon Cupcakes are ready to become the centerpiece of your next warm-weather celebration. With Chefmaster Natural Food Colors, creating beautiful seasonal treats is both simple and fun.
From the tangy lemon cake to the colorful sunset-inspired buttercream swirl, every bite captures a little taste of summer.
