Tie Dye Eggs - Food Color Kids Projects

We, of course, love dying eggs bright and cheery Spring colors, but what we love even more is making them tie-dyed! We have a feeling you’ll love it too. With Chefmaster’s® vivid concentrated gels you’ll be able to make eggs that have the boldest colors Peter Rabbit has ever seen! This is a great project to do with your kids because of the ooey-gooey shaving cream they get to play with. Have fun!

What you’ll need:

  • At least 1 dozen eggs
  • 1 – 6 oz can of shaving cream (not the gel, it needs to be the cream)
  • Chefmaster® concentrated gel food color
  • Toothpicks
  • 14” x 10” baking dish or baking sheet
  • Roll of paper towels
  • Plastic bags or rubber gloves

  1. Hard boil your eggs – Place whole eggs into a saucepan and cover with water. Water should be about 1” above the eggs. Bring the pot to a boil. Once boiling removes the pot from the hot surface and let cool down for 8-10 minutes. Remove eggs from water and pat dry (Be careful, eggs and water will still be hot).
  2. Take the baking dish or baking sheet and cover with shaving cream. Depending on how old your child is you might let them spray the shaving cream onto the sheet. We recommend supervision for this task.
  3. Spread shaving cream evenly across baking sheet using a paper towel or spoon. Shaving cream should be at least ½” thick.
  4. Take a toothpick and use it to add small dollops of Chefmaster® concentrated gel around the surface of the shaving cream. We recommend using at least 3 or 4 colors so that the tie-dye effect looks swirly. We recommend that you do this as the gel is very concentrated and we don’t want your kids to accidentally dye your tabletop or counter.
  5. Have your kids put on rubber gloves or plastic bags over their hands to avoid getting color on themselves? If your kids are extra messy we recommend art smocks as well.
  6. Have your kids use toothpicks to spread out the color on the shaving cream. This can be done by inserting a toothpick into the shaving cream and dragging it around so that it pulls the color in all directions.Tie Dye Eggs-24
  7. Once the color is thoroughly spread out, take the hard boiled eggs and roll them around in the shaving cream. Roll the egg around enough to cover the full egg in color and shaving cream.
  8. Set eggs aside for 30 minutes to let color set.Tie Dye Eggs-3
  9. Wipe off excess shaving cream with paper towels and let eggs set for another 15 minutes to full dry.
  10. Use eggs as decoration or enjoy throughout the Easter season!
